Leander hopes a revision to the city’s Roadway Plan will help bridge the gap between the city’s Transit Oriented Development District and East Old Town, the area located immediately east of US 183 and north of FM 2243.
The revision was unanimously approved May 3 by the Leander City Council. The updated plan will connect two proposed roads that run parallel to US 183 just east of the Capital Metro Park and Ride. The approved connector will fill in the gap between the proposed Hero Way roadway and East South Street.
“Someday that connection has to be made,” Leander Urban Design Officer Pix Howell said.
Howell said the connection was not included in the original Roadway Plan because of cost concerns. The connecting road would be built over the south branch of Brushy Creek, which would add extra construction costs.
Adding the connection will help bridge the already established portion of Leander with anticipated development zones.
“We want to make sure there’s as much access to the rail stop as possible,” Howell said. “I personally think the east side of Old Town will be developed.”
There is no timetable for when the TOD expansion will occur, he said, but it will likely be a gradual transition.
“The intent of this was never to put an additional burden on existing homeowners,” Howell said.
