Longtime Round Rock resident and former Round Rock ISD board of trustees member Raymond Hartfield died June 12 at age 64.

Hartfield, a longtime community advocate, had cancer. A memorial service will be held June 30 at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Round Rock, 1004 N. Mays St.

“Raymond was very much the heart and soul of a lot of the really great things that we’ve seen in Round Rock in the last 10 or 15 years at least,” said Landy Warren,  market president and chief lending officer at First Texas Bank in Round Rock.

Warren served with Hartfield on several boards and steering committees, he said.

Hartfield served as an education advocate for AT&T before retiring and served on the RRISD board of trustees for 14 years beginning in 1994. He was also co-chairman of ACCTion 4 Education, a political action committee focused on bringing Austin Community College to Round Rock.

He was also active in the Round Rock Chamber of Commerce and was named Citizen of the Year by the group in 2010.

“He was tireless in his advocacy,” Warren said, adding that Hartfield was a participant in many community advocacy groups and often led the charge.

Hartfield also served on the boards for YMCA of Greater Williamson County, Skillpoint Alliance, St. David’s Medical Center–Round Rock and the Texas State University Advisory Board.

He is survived by his wife, Ann, two children and four grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Round Rock ISD Partners in Education Raymond Hartfield Memorial Scholarship Fund.

  • My all-time favorite teacher

Raymond Hartfield was the type of teacher that made it fun to go to school everyday. I've always said that he was the best teacher I have ever known. He was my Biology I and Biology II teacher at Davidson High School in Mobile, Alabama. I also took study hall in his class. When I joined Facebook about a year back, he was the first person I attempted to contact. He became my first FB friend. In my senior year, Mr. Hartfield asked me to help him with an annual chore. Every year he would take time to do a chalk drawing of the human body, on the chalkboard. Being somewhat of an artist, I accepted the challenge and spent several months working on a mural for the back wall. I nearly worshipped the man and would have done anything he asked.
It was a pleasure knowing Mr. Hartfield. He will be greatly missed. If you believe in Heaven, feel certain that Raymond Hartfiled is there !!

He saw something in each and every one of us that neither we or our parents saw. An awesome Bio teacher who gave us the hunger to learn more about our world. Thank you sir.

Raymond was a good friend and mentor for me. I have a lot of respect for him and will remember him as one of those special persons who impact your life in great ways and are always remembered.

    God Bless him.

  • My teacher, my coach, my friend

I cannot think of another teacher in school who had more of an effect on me than Raymond Hartfield. He went out of his way to actually EARN the respect that most students continued to have for him from high school and into the age of online social networking. It's a rare sort of gentleman who would be so kindly remembered by kids he encountered during a relatively short time of their lives. Bye, Mr. Hartfield. I'm blessed to have known you.
