The Round Rock Symphony Orchestra is undergoing a change of leadership.

The Symphony’s board of directors introduced Stefan Sanders on March 15 as the orchestra’s new conductor and music director. Sanders will take over responsibilities immediately from former music director Silas Huff, who has taken a new job in Washington D.C.

Sanders comes to the Round Rock Symphony Orchestra from Austin, where he has served as assistant conductor of the Austin Symphony since 2008. Sanders has experience with the Round Rock Symphony Orchestra, having served as a guest conductor in the past.

“I have been watching the growth of this incredible group of musicians,” Sanders said. “When they announced they were looking for a new conductor, I jumped up and down with excitement at the opportunity.”

Sanders, an Austin native, said he began his musical training at a young age. After attending the Interlochen Arts Academy in high school, Sanders went on to the prestigious Juilliard School of Music, where he earned his undergraduate degree in music performance. After graduating, Sanders joined the Buffalo Phylharmonic Orchestra, where he worked and performed for eight years as a trombonist and assistant conductor.

Sanders returned to Austin in 2008, where he joined the University of Texas-Austin’s graduate music program. Sanders is currently in the process of earning his doctorate in music from UT.

“We are so excited to have someone local to expand the program and spread the word,” said Danny Harris, Round Rock Symphony Orchestra president.

Sanders is expected to conduct his first concert with the orchestra April 27 at the City of Round Rock’s Centennial Celebration.
