Rusty Winkstern, owner of The Monument Cafe, continued his "garden-to-table" model with the opening of his newest restaurant, El Monumento, on Oct. 2.

While The Monument Café features homestyle favorites like chicken-fried steak and pan-fried liver and onions, El Monumento's menu draws inspiration from interior and costal Mexico.

San Antonio architectural firm Overland Partners designed the restaurant, which seats approximately 300 patrons throughout 7,600 square feet.

"They are very good at melding the urban with the natural," Sam Pfiester, managing partner of San Gabriel River Place Partners, told Community Impact Newspaper in May 2011 about the restaurant's design. The San Gabriel River Place Partners designed The River Place development, where the restaurant is located.

The restaurant is located at 205 W. Second St. and offers patio dining over the San Gabriel River. Hours are Sun.–Thu. 11 a.m.–10 a.m. and Fri.–Sat. 11 a.m.–11 p.m. For more information, call 591-7866.

El Monumento is worth the trip

We drove from Austin to Georgetown because we wanted to try El Monumento. From the parking lot (with ample spaces!) you walk into this amazing lush tropical paradise with serene architecture and calming ponds. We had a perfect old fashioned, my new favorite drink now that I've had one here, and then decided to eat inside. The kitchen is large and open and beautiful and busy creating some delicious food. We had the napoli salad---fresh and just the right amount of spice. Then we sampled the shrimp chile relleno which was the best shrimp and sauce I've ever eaten. The campechana was full of flavor and served in a beautiful glass--one of many pleasing presentations. The other favorite dish at our table was the duck mole. I've never been a fan of mole but this mole was complex and rich and delicious. The desserts were so tasty but the coffee stole the after dinner show. Served at the table in beautiful French press with cream (whipped just a bit to make it frothy and special) ---it was perfect end for a perfect meal. And our waitstaff was so attentive and professional. We are definitely going back!

El Monumento

Wow, what a great new venue for GT. If you would like some great "non tex mex", this is the place! The building, landscaping, view all combine to the experience.
