Employees of Fort Hood making the daily drive to the military base from places such as Georgetown and Austin have the option to share the commute with others through The Fort Hood Van Pool program.
Matthew Mason, the program manager at Fort Hood, said he has been trying to grow the van pool program since it began at the military Base in summer 2011.
“The program is set up to help those federal employees commute who live more than 15 miles from post,” he said.
The program is a part of the Department of the Army Mass Transportation Benefit Program, a government-subsidized nonprofit program that aims to reduce traffic and emissions. All military, civilian and Nonappropriated Fund employees are eligible to be reimbursed for a portion of the transportation costs through the program.
Mason said the program has six vans that make the drive to Fort Hood, but they are trying to expand the program and reach out to people who make the daily commute to Fort Hood.
“I see the same cars going up and down Hwy. 195 everyday,” he said. “So it’s like, ‘You folks should be in this van.’”
