Concordia University Texas selected John P. Garrett, publisher of Community Impact Newspaper, as the 2010 “Excellence in Leadership” Gala honoree Feb. 26.
The “Excellence in Leadership” Gala recognizes an outstanding Christian leader each year and raises money for the university’s annual scholarship fund. Past honorees have included Roger T. Staubach, executive chairman of The Staubach Company and former Dallas Cowboys quarterback, Austin business and community leader Tom Stacy, president of T. Stacy & Associates, and Texas Sen. Kirk Watson.
"I am very humbled to be named as this year's 2010 ‘Excellence in Leadership’ Gala honoree,” Garrett said. “Those who know me well understand that anything I have been able to accomplish has only come to be because of the grace of God and the great people He has allowed me to work with at Community Impact Newspaper. Being associated with Concordia University's commitment to developing Christian leaders is quite an honor."
Raised in Austin, Garrett graduated from Pflugerville High School in 1993 and left Central Texas to attend Sam Houston State University where he earned a bachelor of fine arts in radio and television. After graduation, Garrett moved to Houston and began his career at the Houston Chronicle. In 2001 he moved his family to Round Rock and became the advertising director at the Austin Business Journal where he helped turn the struggling publication into one of the top-performing business journals among a chain of 41. While he was at the Austin Business Journal, Garrett noticed that the development activity in Round Rock and Pflugerville was largely unnoticed in the media and had a notion that the average citizen and business owner would appreciate a newspaper that focused on business and development activity at the hyperlocal level. Because of this inkling he created a free monthly publication, to be delivered by the mail, launching the first edition of Community Impact Newspaper in September 2005.
Today nearly 450,000 households and businesses in the seven Central Texas markets receive Community Impact Newspaper each month—making it the largest distributed newspaper in Central Texas. In September of 2009, Community Impact Newspaper launched its first edition outside of Central Texas with the Northwest Houston edition that covers the CyFair area and is delivered to 105,000 homes and businesses.
This year’s Concordia University Texas “Excellence in Leadership” Gala will be held Aug. 27 in Austin at the Four Seasons Hotel.
