Austin Community College's tax rate will inch up slightly for the 2013 fiscal year.

The district is proposing a 0.3 percent increase from 9.48 cents to 9.51 cents per $100 of valuation, Associate Vice President Neil Vickers said.

Vickers said the tax rate was "effectively flat" and that the average appraised value had decreased.

District spokeswoman Alexis Patterson Hanes said the average taxpayer's bill would decrease by almost a dollar.

Because the proposed increase is greater than the effective rate—the tax rate it would take to generate the same amount of revenue as last year—the district will hold two public hearings in August.

The board of trustees scheduled the hearings for noon on Aug. 20 and 27 at 5930 Middle Fiskville Road.

The tax rate is made up of two parts: a 9 cent maintenance and operations tax rate and a 0.51 cent debt service tax rate.

Don't Drive

Car insurance is nothing like property taxes, you aren't required to have insurance unless you drive on public roads and then the required insurance protects people from you. Property tax is taken at government point, I have no way to avoid it, and it doesn't benefit me at all. Nothing alike at all.

If you can't afford a $350 class, maybe you should sell your car and take the bus. Then get a job to pay for your own education, at $10 an hour that walmart pays cashiers, you can pay for that class in no time. Why should my kids college fund suffer so you can go to community college subsidized by my dime when I'm paying off my college loans? Grow up and takeresponsibility for your financial obligation.

we are already paying 350 per class, I don't think many of us could afford much more than that...but I can understand where you are coming from as well. I'm tired of paying for my car ins every month when I've never had a claim and don't expect to. Just comes with driving a car like property taxes come with owning a home.

I have a better idea: how about instead increasing the tuition for the people who are going there? Tired of footing all the bills for a community college nobody in my extended family has ever or will ever use. All those 'pennies' add up.
