Benjamin Franklin reportedly said, “When the well is dry, we know the worth of water.”
We may be enjoying what amounts to Austin’s rainy season, but residents and public officials have not forgotten the lessons of last summer’s incredible drought.
All around Southwest Austin, forward-thinking individuals are looking at what they can do to protect this valuable resource.
Both of this month’s front-page stories deal with water policy.
Sunset Valley leaders are trying to balance water affordability with sustainable budgetary practices.
Travis County officials have passed new laws that they hope will prevent western groundwater resources from being overdrawn when new developments are built.
What can the average resident do?
The best thing to do is to educate yourself. Examine your water bill and call your provider if you have questions. See where you could scale back your water use. Visit www.austintexas.gov/department/water-conservation for more information. Small changes can add up to big savings. Contact your local officials and tell them your opinions.
It may seem strange to worry about water issues while we are still getting rain. The sooner we get ahead of this issue, the better off we all will be when the hot and dry weather returns this summer.
