It's hard to imagine something located on FM 1488 in Magnolia could be described as “tucked away,” but Family Tree fits the description pretty well. While the venue's parking lot is right on the street, the restaurant itself is back a little further behind the trees, a cozy looking cabin with a wood patio.
Having only been open for one month, Family Tree's owners are still expanding and experimenting with their menu. In the meantime, the restaurant remains a good place to go if you're looking for simple dishes done right and offered at a wallet-friendly price.
The breakfast menu, which is available from 7–10 a.m., is worth getting there early for. One notable thing about Family Tree is that the staff bakes its own seven-grain bread each morning. Take full advantage of the fresh bread by trying something with toast, like Big B's Breakfast Sandwich—scrambled eggs, cheese, bacon or sausage served on Texas Toast with syrup ($5.50).
The Pancakon Styx—a bacon/pancake combination—are a signature menu item the owners invented. A strip of bacon is fried in pancake batter so it becomes a handle that can be used to dip the pancake in syrup ($4.50).
The menu also includes omelets ($7.25), pancakes (three for $3.99) and the traditional breakfast sample plate, which they call the Magnolia Breakfast—two eggs, bacon, sausage, hashbrowns and toast ($6).
The lunch menu includes several American cuisine classics like the BLT ($5.75), cheeseburger ($7.50) and grilled chicken ($6.95). They also offer a different lunch special every day that can cover everything from barbecue sandwiches to pork pot roasts.
While some restaurants describe themselves as “homey,” the Family Tree's main dining room is reminiscent of an actual residential family room, complete with framed photographs, decorative antiques and a fireplace.
The staff was attentive without being pushy, and the whole experience was exactly what a mid-day lunch break should be: relaxing and simple. When you throw in some good food, there isn't much more that you can ask for.
