Nominations for the grand marshal for the San Marcos Veterans Day Parade are due by 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5 at the Parks and Recreation office, 401 E. Hopkins St.

For the fifth year in a row, the veteran or veterans chosen for the parade leadership honor will be selected by a special committee and will be profiled before the parade, which will be held Nov. 10.

Parade applications are on the city website www. sanmarcostx.gov/parks.

Nominations for grand marshal should be submitted to Lisa Morris, Recreation Programs Manager, at lmorris@sanmarcostx.gov by Oct. 5, or they may be hand-delivered or mailed to the Parks and Recreation office at the Grant Harris Building, 401 E. Hopkins St., San Marcos, 78666.

Nominations must include the full name and relevant details of the individual’s military service, along with detailed contact information, including a telephone number. An electronic nomination format is preferred.

Criteria for nomination include:

  • Must be a San Marcos area resident
  • Must have served in the U.S. military during a time of military conflict
  • Must have been honorably discharged from the service
  • Must be willing to share his or her military service memories

Last year, four veterans were honored. They included World War II WASP veteran Jerry Badger, who served as grand marshal; and honor guard members Mike Aguirre, Army WWII veteran; Jerry Soto, Marine Corps, early Vietnam veteran; and Jude Prather, Army, Afghanistan veteran.

As in the recent past, the grand marshal will lead the parade with the Honor Guard following in either cars or on a flatbed trailer.

Area individuals, educational institutions, businesses and organizations are invited to join the parade. For more information, call the Parks and Recreation Department at 393-8400.
