CENTRAL AUSTIN — Over the next two years, motorists will experience major street closures near the intersection of RM 2222 and Loop 360, due to a project by the City of Austin and two by the Texas Department of Transportation.
The city is building a bridge to replace a low water crossing where Lakewood Drive meets Bull Creek. The $750,000 project started in November and will end in May, during which time Lakewood Drive is closed at the crossing. The new bridge will consist of three spans of 40 feet each, for a total of 120 feet.
Also in November, TxDOT contractors started a $6.5 million project to improve the RM 2222/Loop 360 intersection, construct a new bridge where RM 2222 crosses over Bull Creek and build a new stoplight at the RM 2222/Lakewood Drive intersection. The new bridge will be 208 feet long and will be 19 feet taller than the existing bridge.
The five-phase project is scheduled to be complete January 2012. During much of that time, eastbound RM 2222 will be reduced to one lane.
In mid-March, TxDOT contractors are scheduled to begin safety improvements on RM 2222 from Loop 360 to RM 620. The $119,000 project stretches about 5 miles and involves installing new pavement stripes and markers.
The TxDOT safety improvements are not expected to affect traffic.
