City of Austin discusses possibility of urban rail system

AUSTIN — City of Austin Transportation Director Robert Spillar briefed members of the Downtown Austin Alliance on a proposed urban rail system that would connect Central Austin to Austin Bergstrom International Airport. Spillar said the $625 million project could be completed, under ideal circumstances, by 2015, with Austin citizens paying for about half the costs through bonds and other funding mechanisms.
