City announces first CityWorks Academy

AUSTINAustin Mayor Lee Leffingwell helps city workers pour concrete for a sidewalk.The City of Austin is accepting applications for the first CityWorks Academy, offering 30 residents a 10-week-long, behind-the-scenes look at city government. The deadline to apply is Aug. 19, and the classes will take place from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays from Sept. 8 to Nov. 10.

"The CityWorks Academy is not only going to be informative, but it will also be hands-on and tons of fun," Public Works director Howard Lazarus said.

During the public announcement at the City's St. Elmo Facility, 4411A Meinardus Drive, Public Works supervisor Brad Kirk directed a crew, including Mayor Lee Leffingwell, pouring a concrete ramp and sidewalk. The project is an example of what Academy participants will experience, he said.

Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell, Public Works Director Howard Lazarus and City Councilman Mike MartinezLeffingwell and Austin City Council members have volunteered to participate in Academy sessions, which will take place at a variety of City departments.
