On Friday, Feb. 20, Austin City Hall transformed into a veritable art museum, showcasing the work of local artists, musicians and filmmakers. Presented by the Cultural Arts Division, The People’s Gallery featured more than 150 pieces from various galleries, artists, collectors and museums.

Bustling with energy from hundreds of Austinites, the city building hosted art enthusiasts and curious residents alike. A range of people toured councilmember offices, hallways, the atrium, conference rooms and balconies throughout all three floors. In council chambers, a multimedia screening promoting cultural identity called Faces of Austin, displayed films ranging from portraits of Crestview and Brentwood neighborhoods to the story of a family’s struggle with adoption on flat screens.

A three-judge panel of industry professionals chose work from more than 1,300 entries from 325 local artist and art organizations. Recipients of the Austin Visual Arts Awards also had the opportunity to exhibit their work. The inaugural awards are sponsored by the Austin Visual Arts Association, a non-profit supported by the city’s Cultural Arts Funding Program.

The exhibit, which marks the sixth annual installation, is open through January 2011.
