Marching, Music, and Movement!
The 28th Annual Katy ISD Invitational Marching Festival will take place on Saturday, October 12, at Rhodes Stadium. Thirty (30) marching bands from throughout the greater Houston area will be presenting their competition shows beginning at 8:15 a.m. High school bands from UIL classifications of 3A, 4A, and 5A will take the field every fifteen (15) minutes to perform for a panel of six (6) adjudicators and an enthusiastic crowd.
Each band will be evaluated in the categories of Music, Individual Marching, Ensemble Marching, Color Guard, and Percussion (Drum Line) receiving critiques and constructive comments from the judging experts. In addition to the comments, each competing band will also be scored using rubrics in each category that provide a total of over 115 different indicators (places for critical assessment) for each band’s performance.
The scoring scale ranges from 0 – 5000 points. Bands earning the highest point totals from the two Music judges, the Ensemble Marching judge, and the Individual Marching judge will be named “Class Champion” for each classification (3A, 4A, 5A). The band with the second highest ranking score in each classification will be named “Runner Up.” Caption trophies will also be awarded in each classification for the following categories: “Outstanding Soloist(s)”, “Outstanding Drum Major(s)”, “Outstanding Color Guard” and “Outstanding Percussion”.
This marching competition has taken its place as one of the area’s preeminent events in providing the experience and judges’ expertise to all participating bands and band directors as they prepare for their Regional UIL Marching Competitions. The Katy ISD bands will be performing at the following times: O.D. Tompkins HS – 10:45 a.m.; Seven Lakes HS – 11:00 a.m.; Morton Ranch HS – 11:15 a.m.; Katy HS – 3:30 p.m.; James E. Taylor HS – 3:45 p.m.; Cinco Ranch HS – 4:15 p.m.; and Mayde Creek HS – 4:30 p.m.
The admission for the entire day’s competition is $5 for adults, $3 for students, with children under the age of 12 admitted free with a paid adult admission. Tickets will be available at the entry gates to the stadium on the west side only. Due to the logistical operation for the competition, all spectator parking is in the southwest parking area only. The Katy ISD Invitational Marching Festival will conclude with the announcement of the awards at approximately 5 p.m. The schedule of band performances may be found online on the Katy ISD Fine Arts webpage or contact the Fine Arts Office at 281-396-2270.
