GEORGETOWNAt the Georgetown City Council meeting Jan. 26, council members voted to approve the distribution of approximately $67,000 worth of sponsorship grants from the Georgetown Arts and Culture Board.

These funds will be distributed to local nonprofit organizations:

  • Palace Theater: $18,000
  • Williamson Museum: $4,500
  • Friends of the Georgetown Symphony Society: $2,200
  • Georgetown Symphony Society: $15,680
  • Georgetown Festival of the Arts: $25,000

The council also passed the first reading of a zoning change for a building located at Rock Street and University Avenue. The zoning change would allow retail sales rather than just office space.

Councilman Bill Sattler resigned from the Georgetown Transportation Enhancement Corporation (GTEC) board and Councilman Gabe Sansing, who serves on the GTEC board as chairman, appointed Richard Anderson to serve the remainder of Sattler’s term. This was approved by the council during the meeting.

At the Taylor City Council meeting, also Jan. 26, council members approved going after more funds for the Taylor Regional Park and Sports Complex. Parks and Recreation will apply for a $75,000 grant for projects at the park. The Texas Parks and Wildlife grant would allow the city to add a paved trail, more parking, gardens, a fishing platform, benches and a climbing boulder. If granted, funds will be awarded in the fall.

Attached, freestanding, and low profile signs will be allowed on properties zoned parks or industrial, as council amended the sign ordinance. Signs in these areas must stand less than 35 feet high and be at least 30 feet from the curb.

Council members voted for an election be held May 8 for Districts 1 and 4. Terms of Mayor Pro Tem Ella Jez, District 4, and Councilman Donald Hill, District 1, expire this year. Those interested in running for election can pick up applications to file at Taylor City Hall between Feb. 8 and March 8.

After the U.S. Census in April, the city may have to add another voting precinct if the number of voters in Taylor shows a significant increase. Voting districts will remain the same this year even counting the voters added during the recent annexation because the ratios in the districts remained the same.

The council also rescheduled the Feb. 11 City Council meeting for Feb. 9.
