GEORGETOWN — Georgetown City Council confirmed Wayne Nero as police chief Feb. 23. Nero, the assistant police chief in DeSoto, will replace interim police chief Brent Schacherl, who has led the department since May 2009. Nero expects to start in his new position in April.
Nero served as the assistant police chief and as an officer for DeSoto, a city southwest of Dallas with 48,500 residents, since 1994. Before becoming a police officer, Nero was a Marine from 1989 to 1993, where he led a team responsible for presidential security at Camp David, Md.
He graduated from The FBI National Academy, is a certified master peace officer and has a master’s degree in homeland security leadership from the University of Connecticut and a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice administration from Columbia College in Columbia, Miss.
"We did not just want to settle to get anyone,” City Manager Paul Brandenburg said in a statement. “We have found a candidate who is a perfect fit for the department, organization, and community. Wayne Nero has the management skills and leadership to take the department to the next level as our community continues to grow."
