The city's longest-tenured city employee, Robert Hernandez retired from the Georgetown Police Department after a 35-year career.

When Hernandez started with the Georgetown Police Department in 1974, he was one of five officers and the first Hispanic officer on the force. At the time, the department was located at 614 Main St. One of his duties at that time was writing parking tickets for cars on the Square. He also worked on an investigation of a student who was killed and helped find the suspect, who was tried and convicted.

Hernandez became a lieutenant in 1986. He made the rank of captain in 2001 and is a certified master peace officer.

Interim Police Chief Brent Schacherl said Hernandez has worked in every aspect of police work.

Hernandez said he plans to stay active at home during his retirement.
