Clinic offers H1N1 test, seasonal flu shots

NextCare Urgent Care is offering a test that identifies the H1N1 virus and other infections using DNA technology. The quick nasal test helps health care providers diagnose the specific type of virus within six to 24 hours in order to make sure patients receive the appropriate treatment.

Dr. Lee Resnick, chief medical officer of NextCare Urgent Care, said many clinics offer a rapid flu test, but few are able to define the specific type of infection.

“The rapid flu tests used in most doctor's offices are far less sensitive and do not differentiate between seasonal flu and H1N1,” he said. “Distinguishing between seasonal flu and H1N1 is critically important for choosing proper treatment, as the seasonal flu is resistant to some of the commonly used flu medications.”

The test, known as molecular differential diagnosis, could help physicians alter the treatment plan for a patient. The test also allows physicians to determine whether a patient needs antiviral medicine or antibiotics.

The quick diagnosis can help schools and work places gain a definite answer and be on alert if a student or worker has been infected with the H1N1 virus or another illness.

Patients do not need to schedule an appointment. The H1N1 diagnostic test is covered by many insurance plans. In order to prevent the spread of the seasonal flu this year, every NextCare location offers seasonal flu shots for $25. Visit www.nextcare.com for the nearest location.
