Medical professionals in Central Texas are changing health care delivery models by adding services, launching pilot programs and using data to keep doctors accountable for treatment outcomes as a result of the Affordable Care Act.

The first psychiatric emergency department in Central Texas opened at University Medical Center Brackenridge on April 29. The ED has 17 beds and is meant to relieve overcrowding at general emergency rooms.

The new Dell Children's unit at Cedar Park Regional Medical Center includes a playroom with a mural by local artist Kathleen McElwaine. CPRMC staff said a child life specialist plays with children in the room and helps them cope with having to stay at the hospital.
