Construction on a new Kroger is slated to begin this fall inside the master-planned community of Towne Lake in Cypress.
The store, which will be built at the southwest corner of Barker Cypress and Tuckerton roads, will be 120,000 square feet.
"This Kroger store will have an architectural design similar to a Texas Hill Country look," said Fred Caldwell, CEO of Caldwell Companies, the developer of Towne Lake. "It will be a lot different than the traditional grocery store people see. It's a very unique look, and it will fit well within Towne Lake."
The new store, which could be open by the fall of 2013, will greatly benefit residents of Towne Lake, Caldwell said.
"Having a major grocery store is so valuable to our residents' quality of life to be able to pick things up on the way home and make a quick trip to the store," he said. "It's also a great benefit for all those families south of Hwy. 290 who can utilize and appreciate a high quality grocery store right there in the neighborhood."
The new store will be located in Towne Lake's commons area, the front section of the community that will feature commercial property. The Boardwalk at Towne Lake—which residents will be able to reach by boat—will also be a portion of the commons area. The site will feature waterfront dining, shopping, office and medical space, along with an outdoor amphitheatre.
"We hope to start construction on the amphitheatre in the fourth quarter, and that's where we will have some lakeside docks," Caldwell said. "Technically, someone could take their boat to the amphitheatre docks, walk across the street to Kroger and go back to the boat."
Caldwell said he hopes to have several restaurants in place on the boardwalk by the end of 2013.
"We haven't signed them yet, but we've had good interest from some high quality restaurants that want to locate there," Caldwell said. "Our goal is to create a community area conducive not only to retail but to businesses that want to locate in the area."
There are several other Kroger locations in Cy-Fair, including one down the street from Towne Lake at FM 529 and Barker Cypress Road. There are no plans for store closings in the Northwest Houston area at this time, according to Kroger's public relations department.
