Williamson County invites public to newest parkland

LEANDER — Williamson County officials welcome residents to be among the first to explore the county’s newest parkland next month.
The Williams Tract, more than 1,000 acres of meadows, wetlands and hills located between Leander and Liberty Hill, will be the site of a guided nature walk, horse ride and open house April 10.
During the event at the Williams Tract, visitors can review the park’s conceptual master plan, which includes future hiking trails, campgrounds, equestrian trails and a visitor and heritage center.
Guests can hike along 1K, 3K and 5K trails with park staff, native plant guides and Audubon Society members from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Trail Photo Shoot-Out hikes start at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. An equestrian trail ride will start at 10:30 a.m. Riders must bring their own horses and need to be at the park by 10 a.m. No late riders will be accepted.
Members of the Williamson County Commissioner's Court approved the Williams Tract Master Plan in January. The plan is a blend of community input and county needs that emphasizes conserving and protecting natural open spaces.
A budget of about $23 million is estimated to build the park, which will be phased and financed through grants and bonds. No time line has been set for putting the master plan in place.
County workers are currently working on a restoration plan for removing introduced species to return the site to its original state.
To reach the park, take SH 29 west to Liberty Hill and turn left on RR 1869. Turn left on CR 282 and the park is on the left, just south of CR 284.
