Amendment reduces senior citizens’ and disabled citizens’ school property tax

A constitutional amendment added to the May 12 ballot would extend a school property tax reduction, approved in 2005, to senior citizens and people with disabilities.

The one-third reduction in school property taxes was not initially available to homeowners whose taxes are capped because of age or disability. Senate Joint Resolution 13 would correct the oversight and affected property owners would see the reduction in taxes reflected on their next tax bills.

The wording of the resolution is as follows: “The constitutional amendment authorizing the legislature to provide for a reduction of the limitation on the total amount of ad valorem taxes that may be imposed for public school purposes on the residence homesteads of the elderly or disabled to reflect any reduction in the rate of those taxes for the 2006 and 2007 tax years.”
