Fire inspections
Businesses in Leander are required to undergo an annual fire inspection to ensure they are compliant with the 2003 International Fire Code. Until recently, there was not a dedicated position for conducting the inspections, but now Lt. Robert Hogue of the Leander Fire Department will head up the task. Hogue will be contacting business owners by telephone or mail within the next year to schedule inspections. Some major issues to look for include proper number of exits, fire exit signs, fire lanes, occupancy and safe storage of flammables and explosives. The main LFD station is at 201 N. Brushy St., and Hogue can be reached at 528-2847.

Aquatic Industries, Inc. will close its Leander plant next year, gradually phasing out operations and cutting 101 jobs, said David McFarland, director of marketing for Lasco Bathware, which owns Aquatic Industries. The decision to close the plant is a result of Lasco consolidating its operations. There is a possibility some Leander employees might be offered positions at other Lasco operations if they are willing to relocate, McFarland said. All employees at the plant will have notice of at least 60 days before their division is shut down, he said. The plant, 11880 Old 2243, will be completely shuttered by mid-2009.
