Energy Star products to be sold tax free Memorial Day weekend
By Community Impact Newspaper Staff Thursday, 14 May 2009
Texans can purchase select Energy Star qualified products without having to pay state and local sales taxes during Memorial Day weekend, May 23-25. The tax-free shopping weekend is offered only for appliances and other energy-related products as an incentive to encourage statewide conservation.
Products that qualify for the tax exemption are room and central air conditioning units less than $6,000, clothes washing machines, ceiling fans, dehumidifiers, dishwashers, incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs, programmable thermostats and refrigerators less than $2,000. Qualifying products display the Energy Star logo.
Energy Star is a joint program of the Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, and the Department of Energy. Earning the Energy Star designation means a product meets strict energy-efficiency guidelines set by these two federal agencies.
Lowe’s Home Improvement stores are further encouraging energy conservation during the tax free holiday by offering an additional 10 percent off the normal sale price of Energy Star appliances during Memorial Day weekend.
There is no limit on the number of qualifying items available for purchase during this sales tax holiday, and an exemption certificate is not required.
