Williamson County Precinct 1 Commissioner Lisa Birkman will host an open house regarding road improvements to Pond Springs Road on May 21, from 5:30-8 p.m. at Live Oak Elementary, 8607 Anderson Mill Road, Austin, according to a County press release.

The open house will include a formal presentation at 6:30 p.m. Written questions can be submitted at the open house, and will be answered later in the evening. The project is a partnership between Williamson County and the City of Austin. The County’s share of the project will cost $3.5 million, which will be paid for with money from 2006 bonds, said Connie Watson, public affairs manager for the County.

Pond Springs Road runs parallel to and just east of US 183, beginning north of McNeil Road, continuing north for 1.9 miles, and ending short of the intersection with the US 183 frontage road. The proposed improvements along Pond Springs Road include a 12?foot center turning lane between two 11?foot travel lanes. These improvements will end before the roadway connects with US 183 frontage roads.

Six?foot shoulders will be built as well, which the City of Austin plans to upgrade to bike lanes in the future. A five?foot sidewalk to improve pedestrian safety will be added to the east side of the street. To protect the environment, the road will be constructed at a slight slant to the east side where a 15?foot grass strip will be added to ensure water quality.

The design by URS Corp. is scheduled for completion in early 2009. Utility relocation coordination is under way and construction is anticipated to begin in the summer.
