Cedar Park earns bronze in statewide fitness challenge

Residents in Cedar Park have been declared among the healthiest in the state after participating in a Texas-sized challenge.

The Texas Round-up Governor’s Challenge has awarded The City of Cedar Park a bronze medal in the 20,000-99,000 population bracket. It was the first year Cedar Park participated in the challenge.

“Being recognized as one of the fittest cities in the state is quite an accomplishment, but it is our citizens that really deserve the recognition and the benefit that comes from being fit,” Cedar Park Mayor Bob Lemon said.

In 2004, Governor Rick Perry launched the statewide fitness initiative to encourage Texans to become more active and make healthier choices. Every spring, the Texas Round-up gives Governor’s Challenge Awards for cities with the highest per capita participation in each category.

The GetFitTexas! Challenge encourages users to finish and record 30 minutes of physical activity at least five days a week for six weeks.

Of 980 Cedar Park residents who participated in the 2009 challenge, 239 logged 150 or more minutes of activity each week by the end of the challenge.

Longview won first place in the 20,000-99,000 bracket; Round Rock claimed second place and Cedar Park earned third place.
