Leander residents who struggle with food, rent and utilities can get some relief this summer thanks to a $10,000 donation from the United Way of Williamson County.
The money, which came from a surplus in the 2008-2009 budget, was given to Hill Country Community Ministries, a collective of churches that helps people in need.
Two other nonprofits, Hill Country Community Ministries in Leander, The Caring Place in Georgetown and Round Rock Area Serving Center, also received $10,000 donations, the United Way announced June 15. The organizations were picked because each serves a geographically distinct area of the county.
Hill Country Community Ministries, a coalition of churches founded in 1983, helps families in crisis and those living in poverty in southwest Williamson and far northwest Travis counties.
The ministry operates a food pantry and clothing closet and gives families money for rent, utilities, medical and dental needs. Area churches, businesses, civic organizations, volunteers and the United Way of Williamson County support the group.
Nick Audino, board president of Hill Country Community Ministries appreciates the contribution.
“This generous donation could not have come at a better time,” Audino said. “We’re grateful to United Way for the confidence they have placed in us to help meet critical needs in our community.”
The ministry also provides new shoes for children, school supplies, Thanksgiving food boxes, blankets, heaters and fans.
The mission of United Way of Williamson County is to mobilize the caring power of the community to improve life for everyone in Williamson County. For details, visit www.unitedway-wc.org or call 255-6799.
