Olympic Gold Medalist Michael Phelps will visit Wiley Middle School in fall 2009. Students at the middle school earned the visit because they won first place in the Scholastic Book Fairs Spring 2009 National Middle School Contest.

Principal Sylvia Flannery encouraged her staff and students to participate in contests and is proud of her student’s win.

“We are extremely excited and honored to have won this national contest”, she said. “Wiley Middle School students, staff and the community of Leander accepted the challenge to promote reading in an extraordinary way.”

The prize from Scholastic Book fairs includes a $2,000 shopping spree for books and products from Scholastic Book Fairs. Phelps’ appearance will be scheduled taking into consideration the school’s calendar of events and Phelps’ competition, training and professional schedule.

Scholastic, the world’s largest publisher of children’s books, promotes intellectual, personal and cultural growth through literacy. It’s well known for its mail order book distribution system for schools, book clubs and book fairs.
