IBM Austin inventors help company earn most U.S. patents in 2009

IBM Austin inventors contributed approximately 880 patents in 2009 which helped the company become the top patent earner in the U.S. The company, which received 4,914 patents total has earned the title of most inventive company for 17 consecutive years.

The 880 patents received by IBM’s Austin location in 2009 would have ranked 19th on the Top 20 list of patentees with 35 percent more patents than Texas Instruments; more than double Freescale Semiconductor's total; and more than quadruple Dell's total.

IBM also published approximately 4,000 technical inventions in 2009, instead of seeking patent protection, thereby making the inventions available to others.
