Members of the Austin City Council voted unanimously Thursday in favor of a plan to reduce animal euthanizations, and also unanimously approved a $12 million contract to build a new animal shelter in east Austin.

Travis County Commissioners are considering competing bids from Austin's two hospital systems to decide where to base the Austin–Travis County EMS System's STAR Flight helicopters. Both Seton Family of Hospitals and St. David's HealthCare have offered to pay for a new facility.

Earlier this month, Dr. Michael Teneriello of Texas Oncology and St. David’s North Austin Medical Center, performed a da Vinci Surgical System radial hysterectomy—the first of its kind to be performed in the City of Austin. The rare, state-of-the-art, minimally invasive surgical procedure was implemented to treat an early-stage cervical cancer patient. January is national Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, and the American Cancer Society said approximately 11,270 new case of the disease were diagnosed in 2009.
