Free tax service at Community Tax Centers

Community Tax Centers, a program of Foundation Communities, commences a new year of free tax preparation this week. The centers are opening early to encourage residents to use the free community service rather than paying tax preparation fees elsewhere.

The kickoff event will bring together Representative Eddie Rodriguez, Austin City Council members and local community leaders to announce an expanded program of free tax and financial services, including a new financial coaching program.

Individuals with incomes up to $25,000 and households making up to $50,000 are eligible for free tax preparation, with slightly higher incomes allowed for households of five or more. Ten locations with convenient day, evening and weekend hours will be open, including sites in Bastrop, Del Valle and Round Rock.

Community Tax Centers expect to return $26 million in tax refunds to 20,000 Central Texas families this year. Taxpayers can call United Way's 2-1-1 line for more information about locations, opening hours and what documents to bring, or visit www.communitytaxcenters.org.
