Austin Music Memorial accepting nominations
Thursday, 28 May 2009
The Austin Music Memorial program is seeking nominations for 2010 Music Memorial inductees. Individuals considered for induction must have made important contributions to the development of music in Austin and the Austin music community.
The Austin City Council will select the 2010 inductees, each of whom will be honored with a personalized, engraved disc on the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long Center for the Performing Arts City Terrace at an induction ceremony in March 2010.
Nominations are being accepted through Aug. 31.
In order to be considered, a nominee must have been deceased for at least three years prior to Aug. 31, contributed to Austin music and been from, worked or lived in or around Austin.
Nominees do not have to be famous musicians and their contributions to Austin music can be from any music-related aspect. Examples include songwriters, educators, booking agents, lyricists, music directors, publishers, composers, singers, venue owners, distributors and non-commercial music professionals. Nomination forms and instructions are available at www.cityofaustin.org/music/memorial.htm.
Each nomination will be evaluated for several criteria including overall contribution to the Austin music community, relevant lifetime achievement, diversity and musical genre.
The Austin Music Memorial is a program of the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Austin Economic Growth and Redevelopment Services Office and was approved by the Austin City Council on July 26, 2007. The first 10 inductees of the Austin Music Memorial were honored as part of the grand opening of the Long Center for the Performing Arts on March 30, 2008. Ten more inductees were honored in March 2009. The engraved plaques are accessible to the public 24 hours a day on the Long Center City Terrace.
The Cultural Arts Division provides leadership and management for the city’s cultural arts programs and for the development of arts and cultural industries. The Cultural Arts Division is responsible for the Cultural Arts Funding Programs, Art in Public Places Program, community-based arts development, and programs to assist the development of music, film, and creative industries in Austin.
