Solar energy plant in limbo
Solar energy plant in limbo

HOUSTON — A joint project between the City of Houston and NRG Energy Inc. to build the largest solar farm in Texas has been put on indefinite hold.
The New Jersey-based company and Houston officials struck a deal earlier this year for a 25-year power purchase agreement in exchange for NRG paying for the $40 million northwest Houston project. Now, city officials want to sign annual contracts instead of a long-term agreement.
“We both want to develop the project, but until we come up with a solution to ensure the certainty of future payments, we’re not moving forward,” said David Knox, a Houston-based NRG spokesman.

It's a shame the 25-year power purchase between NRG and Houston has been put on hold. Big, long-term projects in sustainable energy are needed to fuel research and development in green tech.
