LSCS will offer university center classes as early as late spring

HOUSTONWhile Lone Star College System opened its newest campus, University Park, in January for approximate 4,000 community college students, the university center will not offer classes until later this year.

Ray Laughter, vice chancellor for external communications, said when LSCS began discussions with the slate of state schools taking residence in the new facility, the universities submitted their program plans and building needs.

“It’s a longer process for them,” Laughter said. “We believe, at least from surveys we’ve done and talking to people, there will be tremendous demand and the universities will have a lot of activity and do very well there.”

The universities had always planned to begin offering courses in fall 2010, Laughter said, with some courses possibly available earlier in the summer or late spring. The public’s excitement for the project caused people to believe the university center would open earlier, he said.

“We never had a firm date from anybody,” Laughter said. “The economy has had an impact on long range plans. Everybody is being more cautious. It was, ‘We will have the buildings ready.’”

The college system is still working on the university center building with plans to finish construction by midyear.
