Round Rock ISD supports breast cancer awareness campaign

ROUND ROCKOctober is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and as all things in Austin turn pink, Round Rock ISD employees are doing their part to raise awareness and funds for cancer research.

A group of RRISD employees has formed a team for the Susan G. Komen Austin Race for the Cure on Nov. 1 at the Domain in Austin. More than 50 employees, a mix of breast cancer survivors and those who have been touched by breast cancer, have joined the team to raise more than $2,100, which does not include the $30 participation fee per person. The team has been sponsored by RockSports, a locally owned print screening and signs company, which will provide special RRISD Team t-shirts to all participants.

The Brushy Creek Elementary community has organized several fundraisers this year to benefit cancer research initiatives. A group of teachers and employees at the school have made plans to travel to Dallas for a 3-day, 60-mile walk benefitting the Breast Cancer Foundation and Susan G. Komen Foundation. The 10-person group had to collect $2,300 per person in order to take part in the walk.

Brushy Creek students and educators organized an event in which school employees bought $5 tickets allowing them to wear jeans on a school day, raising a total of $940. P.E. teacher Charles Wilkerson sponsored another benefit, helping students prepare tamales with supplies from his tamale business for a sale that raised $200
