Pflugerville ISD was recently ranked No. 12 on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Top 20 K-12 Schools List of the largest green power purchasers among primary and secondary schools.

The district purchases nearly 1 million kilowatt-hours of green power annually, which equates to 3 percent of the school’s purchased electricity use.

Green power is electricity generated from environmentally renewable resources such as wind, solar, geothermal, and low-impact hydro energy. These resources generate electricity with no net increase in carbon dioxide emissions.

According to the EPA, PISD’s green power purchase of nearly 1 million kilowatt-hours is the equivalent of eliminating the carbon dioxide emissions of more than 100 passenger vehicles per year, or the amount of electricity needed to power more than 100 average American homes annually.
