ROUND ROCKThe Round Rock ISD Board of Trustees approved the names for the district’s new elementary and middle schools during its board meeting Nov. 19. The board voted unanimously for the names recommended by the naming ommittees: Chandler Oaks Elementary and Robert P. Hernandez Middle School.

The elementary and middle school naming committees presented name recommendations for the new elementary and middle school to the Round Rock ISD Board of Trustees in October, and both schools are scheduled to open in fall 2010. Round Rock ISD will open the new Chandler Oaks Elementary School in the Stone Oak subdivision. The Stony Point 9th Grade Center will open as Robert P. Hernandez Middle School next year due to the opening of Cedar Ridge High School.

The elementary naming committee came to its decision to recommend the name Chandler Oaks Elementary School through a combination of historical and geographic references. The school is named after the historic Chandler schoolhouse and the large oak trees scattered throughout the school site.

The Middle School Naming Committee recommended Robert P. Hernandez Middle School as the name of the new middle school as Cpl. Hernandez has the distinction of being the only Vietnam War casualty from Round Rock. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Navy Cross.

Hernandez was born and raised in Round Rock and graduated from Round Rock High School in 1967. Hernandez was born to Tino and Josephine Hernandez, both of whom were also born and raised in Round Rock. Both Tino and Josephine Hernandez retired from RRISD where Tino worked as a head custodian and Josephine worked in the kitchen, both at C.D. Fulkes Middle School.
