Round Rock celebrates Martin Luther King

ROUND ROCKThe Round Rock Tapestry Committee, Round Rock ISD and the City of Round Rock Parks and Recreation Department will present the 22nd annual Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday celebration Jan. 16.

The day’s events will kick off with a commemorative walk lead by the Round Rock High School Color Guard. Participants will march east to Mays Street, south to Round Rock Avenue, west to Brown Street, and south to the Baca Center. The public is invited to participate and should assemble at CD Fulkes Middle School, 300 W. Anderson Ave., at 1 p.m. The march will begin at 1:30 p.m.

A program will follow at 2 p.m. at the Allen R. Baca Center for Senior and Community Activities, 301 W. Bagdad Ave. The event will include performances by students from Round Rock ISD as well as local artists Alvina Johns and The Soul Connection. A reception will follow immediately after the program.

The United Way of Williamson County will partner with The Round Rock Area Volunteer Center and several organizations throughout Williamson County for the 2010 MLK Day of Service on Jan.18.

Individuals, families, youth, business groups or community organizations are invited to take action and volunteer their time and talent from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteer opportunities in Round Rock include raking leaves for the Round Rock Housing Authority; finishing dry-wall and painting for the Neighborhood Conference committee; and blanket making for use by several area nonprofits.
