The downturn in the national economy has been on the minds of almost everyone. People are watching Washington and Wall Street closely. We have all heard stories that range from people buying gold bars to pulling back on the expansion plans of their business. I always have in the back of my mind my grandmother’s stories of her childhood as the U.S. was trying to recover from the Great Depression. She told me how she went to bed hungry, ate strange foods like fried cream of wheat and boiled chicken feet and saved up money she earned over weeks of picking cotton to buy her mother a long-handled spoon.

Personally, I don’t think we are in any danger of something that drastic happening soon, and with the recent lower gas prices, I have a little more money to spend on other things. So, as we head into the holiday shopping season, I will shop locally and support the economy here. Look for our retail guide in the December issue for your holiday shopping needs.

However, if your outlook on the economy still causes you some heartburn, we have a handy healthcare directory inserted in this issue. You can also check out local physician listings on health.impactnews.com, a new interactive feature on our website.
