When I go back to the ranch where I grew up, I am amazed at how the little sticks we planted in the yard when I was a kid are now fairly large oak trees that reach well above the roof of my parents’ house. Trees are a treasure. Without them, we would not have childhood memories of treehouses, Tarzan would not be so interesting and in the Texas heat, picnics would not be very pleasant.

Improving or preserving the beauty of the community is probably one of the most worthwhile things we can do, both in terms of quality of life and how it impacts the local economy and workforce. People sometimes select their homes based on the trees in the neighborhood, and others decide where they want to work and live based on the beauty of a city.

Just as Round Rock is preserving and planting trees, Pflugerville also has major tree planting programs underway. April 3 is Arbor Day, and the mayor of Pflugerville accepted the city’s second Tree City U.S.A. Award given by the National Arbor Day Foundation. Since Pflugerville is located on what was once vast acres of farmland, it is great to see how the parks and recreation department and City Forester April Rose are working to beautify the area with native trees.

I love spring, and I am looking forward to going to some Round Rock Express baseball games, fishing and enjoying other outdoor activities with my daughter. I hope you enjoy some time outdoors, too.
