1. New apartments
City North at Sunrise Ranch, at the corner of Old Settlers Boulevard and Sunrise Road, will hold grand opening festivities Nov. 14 from 2 to 7 p.m. Refreshments, giveaways and live music will be provided, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 4 p.m. Tours of the community’s one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments will be available. 2. Firehouse Subs

3. Thanksgiving canned food drive

4. Keeping kids safe
STARRY, 1300 N. Mays St., recently received $540,000 from the Family and Youth Services Bureau of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The three-year federal grant will be used for the Shelter Alternatives and Family Empowerment program, or S.A.F.E., designed to provide help for homeless and runaway youth in Williamson County. 5. Family hair cuts
Maxie Family Hair Salon recently opened at 1200 Palm Valley Blvd., Ste. 1196. The salon offers hair cuts, color, perms, up-dos and waxing for men and women. Customers get 10 percent off coloring on Mondays and Thursdays. Walk-ins are welcome. Call 238-6473.
6. Trashy Roots
Mother/daughter team Laurie Martin and Anna Craig opened Trashy Roots Salon & Spa, 117 Louis Henna Blvd., Ste. 150, in September at the shopping center near Jason’s Deli. It offers hair cuts for women, men and children, as well as vivid hair coloring in colors such as red, blue, green and purple. Hair and eyelash extensions, facials, waxing, eyebrow tinting and massages and High-Maintenance Man hair cuts are available. Walk-ins are accepted. 7. Gift shop sale
The gift shop at St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center, 2400 Round Rock Ave., is having its annual tax-free and 20 percent off sale Dec. 3 and 4 from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Home and tree holiday decorations, lamps, crosses, jewelry and collegiate gifts are available. Proceeds go to the hospital. The gift shop is located just inside the front door of the hospital. Call 341-5233.
8. Turtle Creek
Dunkin’ Donuts and Fitness 360 are expected to open mid-November at Turtle Creek Market, the 34,700 sq. ft. retail center at 1500 South A.W. Grimes. IBC Bank also signed on as a future tenant. Lease space is available. Call 302-1500 or visit www.thedupontgroup.com.
9. 24-hour gym

10. Water pressure
A new water pump station is under construction at the northeast corner of Pfennig Lane and Black Locust. The 26-foot tall ground storage tank and pump station will boost treated water from Lake Pflugerville to the western side of the city. Once the station is functioning, which is expected by summer 2009, all City of Pflugerville water customers will have surface water from Lake Pflugerville as their water source. 11. Life Shakes ‘n More
In September, Ben and Kay Wolfe opened Life Shakes ‘n More, which offers healthy meal alternatives. Located within The Workout Room at 2700 W. Pecan St., Ste. 302, Life Shakes’ shakes are available in a variety of flavors with less than 300 calories, including lemon ice box pie, root beer float and key lime pie. 12. Gingerbread house workshop

The City of Pflugerville is taking applications for positions on the Architectural Review Board, Board of Adjustment, Library Board, Parks and Recreation Commission, Pflugerville Community Development Corporation and Planning and Zoning Commission for terms beginning Jan. 1, 2009. 16. Cookie Haus

Volunteers needed
Snappy Snacks Mobile Catering is looking for volunteers and sponsors to help deliver food to 1,500 north Austin families on Dec. 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The local caterer is sponsoring its fifth annual Celebration of Love holiday drive to raise money to buy food and gifts for struggling families. 17. Taste of Ethiopia
Taste of Ethiopia is open under new ownership at 1466 Grand Avenue Parkway. 19. Jack in the Box
Pflugerville’s first Jack in the Box restaurant opened Oct. 13 at 1700 FM 685 at the Pfluger Crossing Shopping Center. It is open 24 hours a day. Call 252-7834.
20. Lone Star Kolaches
Lone Star Kolaches opened Oct. 20 at 2606 Pecan St., Ste. 101 in the Pecan Street Market shopping center. More than 30 varieties of traditional Czechoslovakian pastries are available, including fruit-, meat- and egg-filled kolaches. The restaurant is open from 5:30 a.m to 2:30 p.m. daily. Youth basketball
The Pflugerville Youth Basketball Association is registering players for the 2008-2009 season. Fees are $90 for the first child and $80 for each additional sibling.
