1. Raw sports
Sushi and sports fans will be able to enjoy both at Sushi Nini, which opens Jan. 15 at 117 Louis Henna Blvd., Ste. 160, where Hangtown Grill was previously located. 2. Shop and eat
Phase one of the University Commons Shopping Center is complete at the northeast corner of IH 35 and University Boulevard. Tenants include Pei Wei Asian Diner, zpizza, Sprint, Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches, Jamba Juice and Starbucks, all of which opened last fall. Space is available at the shopping center. 3. Dell Diamond expansion
The Round Rock Express kicked off celebrations in November for the team’s 10th baseball season at the Dell Diamond, 3400 E. Palm Valley Blvd. In late November, Round Rock Express founder and CEO Reid Ryan unveiled a commemorative logo and presented plans for a new luxury suite level called the Intel Club. The stadium is undergoing a $3.1 million improvement project to install a new elevator near the home plate section, additional sun-shading above the stadium seating and an expanded press box on the third level. Construction will be complete before the first pitch of the 2009-2010 season is thrown out in April. On Dec. 10, Marc Bombard was named the new Round Rock Express manager. 4. Manufacturing technology award
A local high-tech company that makes processing tools to enable the design and manufacture of printed electronic devices, NovaCentrix, won the 2008 Best Manufacturing Technology Award for its Pulseforge tools at the Printed Electronics 2008 Tradeshow in San José, Calif., on Dec. 4. 5. University Oaks
Compass Trading Co., Massage Envy, Sandella’s Flatbread Café, Sport Clips Haircuts, Squeeze Fresh Smoothies and Which Wich? recently opened at the University Oaks Shopping Center, 201 University Oaks Blvd. Razoo’s Cajun Café is expected to open Jan. 16, and Mighty Fine Burger is expected to be complete in April. 7. Downtown restaurant
A new café opened Nov. 11 at 110 S. Harris St. Simmer on the Corner has dine-in, take-out and catering services and features hot and cold sandwiches, fresh pastries, salads and specialty homemade soups. 8. Twinkle, twinkle
A new childcare facility, Twinkle Learning Center, is open at 2050 Double Creek Drive. The locally owned center offers childcare services for children 6 weeks to 13 years old. Twinkle features a sprinkler park, Star-Brite learning program and summer programs for children. Call 388-2050.

9. Nail salon
Annie’s Nails & Spa opened last month in the new Pecan Plaza shopping center at 1912 W. Pecan St. Walk-ins are accepted at the nail salon. Hours are Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call 989-1161.
10. Salon and spa relocates
After more than 16 years at the Wells Branch Plaza shopping center, Pflugerville resident Blanca Rodriguez moved her salon, Stylin’ Spa & Salon, to the new Pecan Street Market shopping center at 2606 W. Pecan St. The full-service salon is expected to open in late January and will offer haircuts, color and highlights, as well as facials, waxing, manicures, pedicures, massages, body wraps, airbrush tanning and tanning beds. 11. Road construction
JC Evans Construction of Leander was awarded a $10.4 million construction contract in October for the Pflugerville Parkway West project to extend the road to Greenlawn Boulevard. Work on the project began in November at the west end of the project where the road dead ends near Zola Lane. A concrete hike and bike trail will be on the north side of the new four-lane urban section of the roadway and a sidewalk will be to the south. Other improvements include a new traffic signal at Grand Avenue Parkway, traffic improvements and realignment at the intersection of Heatherwilde Boulevard. The project is expected to be complete by November 2010.
12. Verizon at Stone Hill
The third “evolution” prototype Verizon Wireless store in the Austin area recently opened at Stone Hill Town Center, a million sq. ft. shopping center under construction at the corner of Toll 45 and Toll 130. Located at 18801 Limestone Commercial Drive, Ste. 300, the Verizon store features a demo bar in which customers can experience hands-on interaction with wireless products and services. 13. Lake improvements
The water level of Lake Pflugerville is being lowered in preparation for construction of a new swim area and beach on the north shore and for annual maintenance. 14. New church
Point of Grace Lutheran Church is celebrating the opening of its own building after eight years of meeting at local schools. The 15,000 sq. ft. building is located at 19507 FM 685 and will hold 350 people in the worship area. Worship services will be at 9 and 11 a.m. Sundays beginning Jan. 25. Drop by Drop
The City of Pflugerville’s Drop by Drop Landscaping Rebate Program is underway to encourage gardeners to use planting and selection practices that will promote easy, efficient, economic and environmentally sound water use and conservation. 15. Event venue
Pflugerville residents Lewis and Chelsea McMurtrie are booking weddings for April 2009 at their new event venue at 16611 Edgemere Drive. The Meadows at Gilleland Creek and Pecan Pavilion will host outdoor weddings and events. The venues are available to reserve jointly or separately and can accommodate up to 600 people. 16. Mediterranean buffet
A new restaurant, Mediterranean House Buffet, opened Dec. 12 at 15803 Windemere Drive, Ste. 206, in the Windermere Plaza shopping center. The menu includes a variety of shish kabobs and gyros, hummus, falafel, dolma, baba ghanouj, fattoush, tabouleh, Greek, Arabic and yogurt salad. Catering is also available. Prosecutor of the Year
A prosecutor with the Williamson County Attorney’s office, Tina Graves, was named Prosecutor of the Year by the Williamson County Children’s Advocacy Center at the eighth annual Child Protection Team Appreciation luncheon in November. In the last year, Graves has handled 308 hearings, two jury trials and 13 mediations.
