1. Design change

2. Storybook beginning

3. Training center
A Dale Carnegie Training office opened a new location April 1 at 1717 N. IH 35. The company offers leadership- and performance-based training to businesses such as Dell, Inc. and Round Rock ISD. 4. Computers needed
The Round Rock Area Serving Center at 1099 E. Main St. is in need of used, working-condition laptop and desktop computers for its Computers for Kids program, which provides computers for Round Rock ISD and Hutto ISD students who do not have access to them at home. 5. Martial arts movement
Tiger Jung’s Tae Kwon Do Martial Arts school relocated to 1205 Round Rock Ave., Ste. 107. Instructors teach basic defense skills and Olympic-style martial arts training, as well as character development and confidence building. 6. Hesters Crossing
The Texas Department of Transportation, City of Round Rock, local business owners and residents celebrated the completion of the $18.3 million roadway improvement project at Hesters Crossing Road April 16. Approximately 30,000 vehicles pass through the intersection of Business 35/Mays Street and IH 35 daily. The improvements provide better access to businesses and reduce traffic congestion. 7. Church expands
One Way Baptist Church, 2107 Hairy Man Road, recently announced plans to build a Family Life Center where assistance to community youth, tutoring for at-risk teens, and budget counseling for families and single parents will be offered. 9. Independent healthcare
Community Health Centers, a healthcare center formerly operating as a department of the City of Austin, recently became a nonprofit healthcare organization and is now CommUnityCare. The organization will continue to offer healthcare services to patients, but the new nonprofit status will qualify the organization for more funding options and improve its ability to meet community needs. 10. Creole kitchen
Madea’s New Orleans Creole-Style Kitchen opened in March at 113 Pecan St., Ste. E inside Players Billards. The menu contains authentic New Orleans cuisine such as gumbo and jambalaya. Hours are noon to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Call 254-230-5071.
11. Money in the bank
First State Bank opened April 20 on the corner of Grand Avenue Parkway and Central Commerce Drive. This is the first Pflugerville location for the bank, which has more than 30 locations throughout Central Texas. A ribbon cutting ceremony and open house will be held May 7 at 11 a.m. Call 670-0391.
12. A Fete to remember
The Richland Community Club will celebrate the 62nd annual May Fete on May 9 from 4 to 11p.m. at Richland Hall, 18312 Cameron Road. The festival is a German tradition that celebrates the beginning of harvest. It is open to the public and includes music, dancing, a silent auction, games, food and a bake sale. 13. Paradigm shift
Paradigm Metals celebrated 25 years in business in Pflugerville April 24. 14. New Additions
New menu and buffet items are available at Mediterranean House Restaurant & Buffet, 15803 Windermere, Ste. 206. Gyro meat, baklava and other desserts are served in the buffet. Chamber awards
The Greater Pflugerville Chamber of Commerce, located at 101 S. Third St., held its 24th annual awards banquet April 2 at The Golf Club at Star Ranch. A small-business award went to Charles Eiben Insurance Agency. Atmos Energy and IESI were named large businesses of the year. Coach of the year
Pflugerville High School Basketball Coach Nancy Walling was named 2009 District Coach of the Year by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association. She is one of only nine coaches across all divisions nationwide to be honored. She coached in the 2009 WBCA High School All-America Game during the NCAA Women’s Final Four tournament April 4.
