1. Taco time
Taco Shack will open in early August at the University Oaks shopping center, 201 University Oaks Blvd., Ste. 1290. The locally owned, Austin-based restaurant will have a drive-thru and will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Visit www.tacoshack.com.
2. Art school

3. Class for cooks
The Art Institute of Austin, 101 W. Louis Henna Blvd., announced in June that is enrolling students for its new International Culinary School. An associate degree in culinary arts and a bachelor’s degree in culinary management will be offered. Call 691-1707 or visit www.artinstitutes.edu/austin.
4. Environmental eatery
The organic and environmentally friendly pizza parlor, Promise Pizza, will open Aug. 1 in the Turtle Creek Market shopping center, 1500 A.W. Grimes Blvd., Ste. 410. The business offers catering, dine-in and delivery of all-natural pizza in an energy-efficient way. 5. Other people’s treasures
A thrift store opened in June at 1800 N. Mays St., Ste. 107. Ivan’s Treasures and Collectibles is a consignment shop that sells new and used items, including clothes, kitchen ware, collectibles and ’80s toys. 6. Girl power
GENaustin’s clubGEN, an after-school program in which high school girls mentor middle school girls, will now serve students at [6a] C.D. Fulkes Middle School, 300 W. Anderson Ave., and [6b] Chisholm Trail Middle School, 500 Oakridge Drive, beginning in August. The program is also seeking high school girls to volunteer as leaders for the program. 7. Upscale apartments
La Frontera Square Apartments, 2601 La Frontera Blvd. in the La Frontera shopping center, held a ribbon cutting in May for its new units after a severe fire halted construction in December. The fire set production back nine months on the damaged unit, which will open in October. The apartment complex features fitness centers, a lap pool, landscaped courtyards and other amenities. 8. Chinese chow
A new Chinese restaurant opened in June at 1400 E. Old Settlers Blvd., Ste. 102. Beijing Express offers dine-in, pick-up and delivery service. It is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and until 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. It is closed daily from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Call 218-8282.
9. Relocated
The long-standing Austin-based business Gracy Title Company relocated its Round Rock office in June from Palm Valley Boulevard to a larger space at 2007 Sam Bass Road, Ste. 100. Call 244-2946 or visit www.gracytitle.com.
Groomer on the go

10. I scream, you scream
Kaleidoscoops Ice Cream and More Shoppe at 200 E. Pecan St., Ste. 2 is under new ownership and will celebrate its grand opening July 4 with live music and a moonwalk. The independently owned ice cream co-op offers 62 flavors. Visit www.kaleidoscoops.com.
11. New hotel

12. Show business
The Connally High School Theatre Department was selected to perform at the American High School Theatre Festival that runs in conjunction with the world’s largest performing arts festival, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, in Scotland in 2010. CHS was nominated with thousands of other schools from the United States and Canada and selected by the AHSTF board of directors, which chose the top 100 programs. Visit www.edfringe.com.
13. Mexican meal
Tequila Grill opened in June at 103 W. Pecan St., where Curbside Grill was previously located. The Mexican restaurant offers breakfast, lunch and dinner options and is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Call 990-9101.
14. Cookie Camps
The Cookie Haus in downtown Pflugerville, 104 N. Railroad Ave., offers Cookie Camps that run Tuesday through Friday beginning the weeks of July 7, 14, 21, 28 and Aug. 4. Camps for children ages 6-9 are from 8:30 a.m. to noon, and ages 10-13 are from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Children will be taught how to measure, cook and decorate a variety of cookies and desserts. 15. Water pressure
The water pump station at the northeast corner of Pfennig Lane and Black Locust will be completed in July. The 26-foot tall ground storage tank will pump treated water from Lake Pflugerville to the western side of the city, enabling all City of Pflugerville water customers to receive surface water from Lake Pflugerville as their primary water source. 16. New recycling center
The City of Pflugerville opened its first recycling center July 1 at 2609 E. Pecan St., near the Travis County Northeast Metropolitan Park. Hours are Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Scrap metal, batteries, appliances, motor oil, tree limbs, cardboard and paper are accepted. 17. Insured

Volunteer vortex

Pflugerville resident Lance Owen started a home-based solar screen business.
