During the Round Rock ISD Board of Trustees regular board meeting March 26, a Citizen’s Boundary Committee update was presented by Cheryl Vernon, boundary committee member. Vernon reported that the committee continues to work on boundary recommendations.

The boundary committee recommended to the board that Cedar Ridge High School open with freshman and sophomore students for the 2010-2011 school year. In addition, a preliminary vote was cast to support Option G for high school boundaries. Boundary Committee Chair Steve Laukhuf requested that the committee revisit the issue since the proposal was passed by only one vote. Laukhuf said he would like the committee to be in agreement prior to recommending any proposals to board.

The committee is scheduled to meet at 6:30 p.m. March 31 in the Round Rock High School lecture hall to decide on recommendations for middle and high school boundaries. The committee also plans to address the severe overcrowding at Cactus Ranch Elementary School.

The committee will present its final report to the board at 6:30 p.m. April 7 at the RRHS lecture hall.

The committee is considering allowing next year’s freshman the opportunity to begin at their newly zoned high school, Vernon said. Dan Roberts, executive director of long-range planning and business support services, stated to the board that the boundary committee will also learn more about Option A3, Option G, Option H, Option H2 and Option I at its next meeting.

Option A3: Utilizes the original Option A map but also moves the Brushy Creek Elementary area from McNeil High School to RRHS in an attempt to bring McNeil High School below 138% of capacity in 2014.

Option G – Utilizes the original Option A map but also moves the Great Oaks Elementary area from McNeil HS to RRHS in an attempt to bring McNeil below 138% of capacity in 2014. It also move the Stone Oak and Mayfield Ranch neighborhoods from RRHS to Stony Point High School. Under this scenario, RRHS enrollment in 2014 exceeded 2900 students. This option received an initial 50% approval rating from the boundary committee.

Option H – Utilizes the original Option A map and moves Bluebonnet Elementary neighborhood from RRHS to Cedar Ridge High School and moving Great Oaks Elementary area from McNeil HS to RRHS.

Option H2 – Modifies Option G to relieve RRHS by moving the Wells Branch Elementary neighborhood that currently attends RRHS to Cedar Ridge HS and moving the Bluebonnet Elementary neighborhood from RRHS to Cedar Ridge HS. Under this scenario the Berkman Elementary attendance area would attend Stony Point HS.

Option I – Utilizes the original Option A map but assigns future growth in the Lakeline area to RRHS.

The role of the boundary committee is to present a recommendation to the school board. During the public hearings it was made clear that the boundary options were just proposals. The committee reserves the right to edit, change, eliminate and create new scenarios based on the research they have done. The boundary committee also reserves the right to re-discuss and change any of its decisions prior to making its final report to the board on April 7.

The school board will then have the opportunity to accept, reject or edit the committee recommendations presented to them at the April 7 board meeting. Boundaries are not final until the board adopts new boundaries during the April 7 meeting.
