Pflugerville school receives grant for outdoor service project

Dessau Middle School will receive more than $31,000 in grant money to help fund an outdoor program where more than 1,000 middle school participants will learn camping and hiking skills. Students and their parents will also be able to participate in the Texas Outdoor Family workshop, a Texas Parks and Wildlife sponsored event where families receives hands-on experience learning basic outdoor skills.
The grant is provided through the Community Outdoor Outreach Program, which awards groups that are introducing participants to environmental education programs that encourage outdoor activities like camping, fishing, kayaking and more. Nine of the 13 grant recipients incorporated service projects into their programs.
The $1.25 million funding for the CO-OP grants came from a sales tax collected on sporting goods. The deadline to apply for next year’s grant is Oct. 1, 2009.
