Pflugerville sees major increase in May sales tax payments

The City of Pflugerville will collect $618,516 in sales tax allocations in May, a 43.9 percent increase over May 2008, according to a report from Texas Comptroller Susan Combs’ office. The boost in revenue stands out among many nearby cities, several of which experienced declining retail sales amid a national economic recession.

Round Rock’s sales tax allocations decreased by 4 percent, and Austin’s dropped by 9.5 percent. Williamson County cities will receive a total of $8.4 million collectively, 5.1 percent less than last May. Cities in Travis County will receive 7.5 percent less in sales taxes.

May’s sales tax allocations represent sales that were reported to the state comptroller in April. Retailers who file taxes monthly reported March sales figures, and those who file quarterly taxes reported data for January, February and March.

The City of Pflugerville’s finance department recently projected a 20 percent total increase in sales tax earnings from 2008 to 2009. The increase has been attributed to the rising number of retailers moving to the city, including The Home Depot, SuperTarget and Best Buy at Stone Hill Town Center.
