Gattis Elementary students earn awards for artwork

Seven students at Gattis Elementary won awards at the 39th Annual International Children’s Art Exhibition. Olivia Feher, Robert Rios, Nya Williams, Jade Trent, Loreana Rios, Lexie Cooper and Michelle Silvia were selected out of more than 200,000 entries to receive awards for their artwork.
The students’ art teacher, Donna Staten, submitted the artwork for the judging in Osaka, Japan.
“From my experience, when I sent these pictures off, I knew we had some winners,” Staten said. I felt it, and there were qualities in the pieces I knew could win.”
The students will be recognized at an awards assembly May 22 at Gattis Elementary School.
This is the first year the school submitted artwork to the competition. Judging for the exhibition was based on originality, clearly expressed content and depiction of native characteristics. The winning pieces can be seen on the school’s online art gallery at www.artsonia.com/.
