7-year-old Olivia Feher stands with her gold medal winning piece, The students’ art teacher, Donna Staten, submitted the artwork for the judging in Osaka, Japan.

“From my experience, when I sent these pictures off, I knew we had some winners,” Staten said. I felt it, and there were qualities in the pieces I knew could win.”

The students will be recognized at an awards assembly May 22 at Gattis Elementary School.

This is the first year the school submitted artwork to the competition. Judging for the exhibition was based on originality, clearly expressed content and depiction of native characteristics. The winning pieces can be seen on the school’s online art gallery at www.artsonia.com/.
