Pflugerville ISD recognizes teachers, faculty at awards banquet

Pflugerville ISD honored outstanding teachers and faculty members at an awards banquet this month. Laura Sledge, a reading intervention teacher at Caldwell Elementary, and Jerry Karacz, an eight grade math teacher at Kelly Lane Middle School were named district teachers of the year. Sledge is a 20-year veteran teacher who has also taught second grade for Pflugerville ISD. Karacz is in his second year at Kelly Lane and is eighth year total as a teacher.

Other honors at the banquet included recognitions of campus teachers of the year, rookie teachers of the year, humanitarians of the year and district support staff of the year.

Campus teacher and humanitarian award winners were selected by their peers at the campus level and had to complete at least two years of teaching in the classroom to be eligible. Humanitarian award winners were those who represented their campus in a positive manner through interaction with parents, students and other district employees. Bus drivers, cafeteria workers, custodians, groundskeepers, maintenance workers and support staff employees were also recognized for outstanding work and service. Rookie teachers were recognized at the elementary, middle, and high school levels by their principals.

The Pflugerville Education Foundation sponsored the event and funded the $100 award given to campus, humanitarian and support staff award winners, as well as the $500 award for the district teachers of the year. Sledge and Karacz also received laptop computers provided by Braun and Butler Construction and a PISD ring from Central Texas Herff Jones.
